Episode 74: Dance and Romance

Amplified Oklahoma Show Notes

February 17, 2023

February is the month of love. With Valentine’s Day right in the middle, people celebrate their loved ones all month long. From buying chocolates for a significant other to hosting a Galentine’s Day brunch with your best friends, we use this time to celebrate long-lasting bonds and new relationships. Nowadays, we can find people who share our interests in a variety of ways, from meeting through a friend, a class, or online via social media and dating apps. There are no limits to the ways we can find and connect with others. That hasn’t always been the case though. In the 1940s and ‘50s, courting looked a little different, and there were only so many ways you could meet that special someone. With more limited options, one of the most common ways couples met was at a dance.

This month, we’ll hear stories from eight couples who were brought together by dance. Whether meeting at an OSU fraternity dance or a rural barn dance, these couples found love by cutting a rug. We’ll also hear from Halle King, social chair of OSU’s chapter of Chi-O, as she talks about what Greek life formals look like today.
