Hannah Atkins - House of Representatives 1968-1980
Hannah Atkins was interviewed June 22, 2007 as part of the Women of the Oklahoma Legislature Oral History Project. Mrs. Atkins was the first African-American woman elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives, where she served from 1968 to 1980. She represented House District 97 and was a member of the Democratic Party. Mrs. Atkins shares her memories of deciding to run, campaigning, and negotiating support for bills at breakfast meetings. She also discusses life after the legislature including her appointment as Oklahoma Secretary of State and her appointment to the U.S. delegation to the United Nations.
