Mike Wieder has been employed at OSU Fire Protection Publications (FPP) for more than 30 years. He serves as associate director of FPP, as well as executive director of the International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA), which is headquartered at FPP. He has been the writer or editor for more than 40 fire service training manuals and U.S. government research reports. Mike is a fellow of the Institution of Fire Engineers and was named the National Fire Service Instructor of the Year by the International Society of Fire Service Instructors (ISFSI) in 2003.

This updated manual is for fire department staff and others who review plans for compliance with fire and building codes to ensure public safety in the built environment. Content in this book is appropriate for any plan examiners in fire prevention divisions, fire marshal bureaus, building departments and community risk reduction organizations. The 15 chapters in this book present material that meets the job performance requirements (JPRs) of Plan Examiner I and II according to the NFPA 1031: Professional Qualifications for Fire Inspector and Plan Examiner (2014).
