David Oberhelman
co-author of "Collaborating for Impact: Special Collections and Liaison Librarian Partnerships"
December 7, 2016
David D. Oberhelman is the W.P. Wood Professor of Library Service at the Oklahoma State University Libraries where he is the subject liaison for English, history, and other humanities and performing arts departments. He holds a PhD in English from the University of California, Irvine, and a M.L.I.S. from the University of Pittsburgh. Oberhelman has published and presented on a wide range of topics in literary studies and library and information science, including science fiction and fantasy literature, digital humanities, the history of the book, and information literacy instruction.
Special collections and liaison librarian partnerships can have a tremendous impact on the work within the library and the university community. Designed to guide the reader through three different themes – collection stewardship; projects, research, and exhibitions; and instruction – Collaborating for Impact: Special Collections and Liaison Librarian Partnerships offers inspiration and case studies detailing how these departments can impact research, teaching, and learning by working collaboratively. The chapter "OkstateShakespeare: Bringing Special Collections and Digital Humanities into the Undergraduate Classroom," which Oberhelman coauthored with Andrew Wadoski, OSU English, and Sarah Coates, OSU Library, examines a semester-long digital course project in which 4000-level students in a Shakespeare course developed an online companion to Raphael Holinshed's 1587 Chronicle, the source of Shakespeare's histories and other plays. In the process, students worked with the OSU Library's rare book holdings and learned to create a multimedia website with critical commentary. This project promotes undergraduate research and gives students valuable critical thinking and technical skills that will help them in their future academic and professional lives.
