David Oberhelman

co-author of "Digital Humanities and Libraries: Challenges & Opportunities for Subject Librarians"

David Oberhelman is the W. P. Wood Professor of Library Service at the Oklahoma State University Library and serves as the liaison librarian for the English, foreign languages, history, music, and theatre departments. He has a Ph.D. in English from the University of California, Irvine, and a Master's of Library and Information Science from the University of Pittsburgh, and has been on the faculty of the OSU Library since 1997. He has published on digital humanities, scholarly communication in the humanities, Victorian British fiction, science fiction and fantasy literature, and popular culture studies, and he has presented papers at national and international conferences on literary studies and library science. He has also held offices and appointments for organizations such as the Modern Language Association and the Association of College and Research Libraries.Digital Humanities in the Library: Challenges and Opportunities for Subject Specialists is a collection of essays focusing on the role of the subject specialist in creating, supporting and promoting digital humanities projects. The book provides valuable discussions around the role of library subject specialists in digital humanities, gives practical advice regarding support of and collaboration with digital humanities projects, and describes real-world examples to inspire subject specialists to increase their own knowledge and expertise.

Oberhelman's chapter, "Distant Reading, Computational Stylistics, and Corpus Linguistics," examines the literary theoretical and methodological assumptions behind the practice of digital humanities and how understanding them can help subject librarians in their collaborations with faculty and researchers.
