Ramamurthy Mahalingam

Dr. Mahalingam (Mali), obtained his B.S. degree in agriculture with a major in plant breeding from the University of Agricultural Sciences in Bangalore, India. He obtained his M.S. degree in agronomy and Ph.D. in genetics with a minor in statistics from Clemson University, South Carolina. His postdoctoral training was at Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Mahalingam joined the department of biochemistry and molecular biology as an assistant professor in 2003 and was promoted to associate professor in 2009. He has developed an exciting research program on environmental stress signaling in plants. He is a member of the BioProducts and Bioenergy Center with ongoing collaborative research on cellulosic bioenergy. His research is funded by USDA, NSF, OCAST and Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station. He was awarded the Phoenix Award for Outstanding Graduate Faculty Member in 2012. He teaches a graduate level course on functional genomics. Dr. Mahalingam is on the editorial board of journals like PlosOne, BMC Plant Biology and Frontiers in Plant Science.

The unique responses of plants to combined stresses have been observed at physiological, biochemical and molecular levels. This book provides an analysis of all three levels of change in various plants in response to different combinations of stresses. The text provides a general review of the combined stress paradigm, focuses on the impact of higher CO2 levels in combination with other stresses, examines drought stress in conjunction with other abiotic factors in different crop plants as well as the combination of biotic and abiotic factors and discusses the impact of combined stresses in forest ecosystems.
