Lynne Murnane has worked as a senior editor at Fire Publications for the past 30 years. She has also worked for the state as a curriculum developer and an editorial assistant at U.S. News and World Report in Washington, D.C. Murnane was assisted in the editing of this textbook by all of the editors, curriculum developers and graphic designers at FPP; the International Fire Service Training Association, and a committee of subject matter experts.

Essentials of Fire Fighting is FPP's flagship publication. Since the publication of the first edition in 1978, Essentials has sold over 2.5 million copies, making it the most influential publication in the fire service over the past nearly 50 years. The manual is intended to train recruit firefighters on basic skills as they begin their careers. The manual is based upon the National Fire Protection Association standards for Firefighter levels I and II. The 6th edition is sold all across North America and certain areas internationally. It has been translated into Canadian French and Arabic and is currently being translated into Japanese for use nationwide in Japan.
