Leslie Miller
author of "Introduction to Fire Origin and Cause, 4th Edition," project manager of "Hazardous Materials Technician, 1st Edition" and co-author of "Pumping and Aerial Apparatus Driver/Operator, 3rd Edition"
November 4, 2015
Leslie A. Miller was born and raised in Stillwater, Oklahoma, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English with honors from Oklahoma State University. An editor with Fire Protection Publications since 2002, she has written and edited a variety of fire service training manuals. She serves on the National Fire Protection Association's Hazardous Materials Response Personnel committee, and is also a member of the Society for Technical Communication. She writes short fiction for a hobby and is a member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. Leslie was assisted in the authorship of this textbook by all of the editors, curriculum developers and graphic designers at FPP; the International Fire Service Training Association, and a committee of subject matter experts.
Introduction to Fire Origin and Cause is intended to train firefighters and company officers in the initial stages of fire investigation. The manual helps firefighters make early determinations about the origin of a fire and hypothesize likely causes for the fire. This information can then be passed on to fire investigators as key observations and evidence as the they complete the formal investigation. The manual is written to portions of National Fire Protection Association standards for firefighters and company officers. The 4th edition was published to coincide with FPP's Essentials of Fire Fighting and Fire and Emergency Services Company Officer manuals.
The 1st edition of Hazardous Materials Technician trains firefighters to mitigate hazardous materials releases, spills and other incidents. The manual contains information on the chemical behavior of hazardous materials, techniques for product control and safe practices at all hazmat scenes. The manual is based upon the competencies outline by the National Fire Protection Association. It is currently being used nationwide in the United States as the sole training material for the International Association of Fire Fighters in all of their delivered training across the country.
The Pumping and Aerial Driver/Operator Handbook trains firefighters to drive fire service apparatus and to use the equipment on the apparatus safely and effectively. The manual covers pumping operations, friction calculations for supplying sufficient water pressure, and the use of aerial devices such as ladders, water pipes and tillers. The manual is written to standards from the National Fire Protection Association. The 3rd edition is a much needed update on and improvement to the 2nd edition, which was published in 2006.
