Lindsey Hancock of Oklahoma City wins OSU research award

$1,500 presented for First Place

May 16, 2016

Lindsey Hancock of Oklahoma City received First Place in the underclassman category of the 2015 Oklahoma State University Undergraduate Research Award. The award asks students to reflect on the ways a project improved their research skills, critical thinking and inquiry.

Lindsey Hancock, a resident of Oklahoma City, has been awarded the first place underclassman prize for Oklahoma State University Library's Undergraduate Library Research Award. The award, which recognized excellence in research, critical thinking and self-reflection, includes a $1,500 prize.

Hancock is majoring in pre-medical physiology with plans to graduate in spring 2019.

Hancock's research covered the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa as a dangerous multi-drug resistant bacteria and the potential role that the enzyme azoreductase could play in its resistance to antibiotics. Library resources such as access to the MEDLINE database were a major source of information and data in her research process.

"Research teaches you to think critically and consider where your information is coming from," Hancock said when asked about the importance of the research process.

Matt Upson, director of library undergraduate services, launched the award at OSU.

"The award provides an incentive for students to consciously engage with Library resources and demonstrates the Library's commitment to supporting student research in a tangible way," Upson said.

The Undergraduate Library Research Award is funded by the OSU Library in collaboration with the Henry Bellmon Office of Scholar Development and Undergraduate Research. For more information on the award and Hancock's achievements at the OSU library, visit info.library.okstate.edu/researchaward.
