Kevin Adams wins OSU research award

$1,500 presented for First Place

May 16, 2016

Kevin Adams of Lee's Summit, Missouri received First Place in the 2015 Oklahoma State University Undergraduate Research Award. The award asks students to reflect on the ways a project improved their research skills, critical thinking and inquiry.

Recent graduate Kevin Adams has been awarded the first place upperclassman prize for Oklahoma State University Library’s Undergraduate Library Research Award. The award, which recognized excellence in research, critical thinking and self-reflection, includes a $1,500 prize.

Adams, of Lee's Summit, Missouri, is a May 2016 graduate of OSU with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in business management.

Adams began work on his research one year ago in an effort to better understand how a person's background may affect their disposition toward discriminatory thoughts and behaviors. Library resources such as research librarian Dan Chaney and subject-specific databases were utilized in the development of his report.

"This study seeks to identify factors influencing discriminatory thoughts or actions towards sexual minority students at a large, southern, public land-grant institution," Adams wrote in his abstract. "Using the Centrality of Religiosity Scale and the Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Knowledge and Attitudes Scale, this study seeks to analyze the implications religiosity, race, ethnicity, level of education, and gender have on sexual minority discrimination among college students."

Matt Upson, director of library undergraduate services, launched the award at OSU.

The award provides an incentive for students to consciously engage with Library resources and demonstrates the Library’s commitment to supporting student research in a tangible way," Upson said.

The Undergraduate Library Research Award is funded by the OSU Library in collaboration with the Henry Bellmon Office of Scholar Development and Undergraduate Research. For more information on the award and Adam's achievements at the OSU library, visit info.library.okstate.edu/researchaward.
