Julia Meier wins OSU Library Creativity Award

$100 presented for first place

May 19, 2016

Julia Meier received first place in the 2D category of the inaugural Oklahoma State University Library Creativity Award. The competition is designed to encourage and reward the creative efforts of students at OSU by asking them to use techniques, skills and ideas learned during Tech Tuesday at 2 in the classroom or on their own.

Julia Meier of Montesano, Washington won first place in the 2D category of the inaugural Library Creativity Award competition Oklahoma State University. This award includes a $100 prize.

The competition is designed to encourage and reward the creative efforts of students at OSU by asking them to use techniques, skills and ideas learned in the classroom, on their own or at a Tech Tuesday at 2 program held in the Edmon Low Creative Studios.

Meier is majoring in graphic design and plans to graduate in 2018.

Meier's entry, titled "Clothed in Controversy," is a social statement designed to raise awareness about the amount of recyclable clothes thrown away each year. Her piece highlights the percentage of unrecycled clothing represented by typography formed from torn clothes.

"I used the library online databases to research different social issues and was stopped in my tracks when I found out how much clothing was thrown away each year when it could easily be recycled," Meier said. "This piece juxtaposes beautiful re-purposed jean letters with the harsh statistic that a tremendous amount of clothing is thrown away each year."

The Library Creativity Award was launched by the Tech Tuesday Committee of the Edmon Low Library.

"The award is designed to stimulate student interest in the Edmon Low Creative Studios and in the Library in general," said Jackie German, Tech Tuesday Committee chair. "Students can use any item found in the library for the award, regardless of department. Entries don't have to be created solely in the Creative Studios."

The Library Creativity Award is funded by the Clerico Family Chair for Library Excellence.
