Emily Allen of Edgewood wins OSU research award

$750 presented for Honorable Mention

Emily Allen, a junior at Oklahoma State University, has been awarded the upperclassman honorable mention prize for Oklahoma State University Library’s Undergraduate Library Research Award. The award, which recognized excellence in research, critical thinking and self-reflection, includes a $750 prize.

Allen is from Edgewood, New Mexico and majors in history.

Allen's project, which details the evolution of men's formal wear, began as a part of her coursework at OSU. She stated that a friend of hers was a previous ULRA honorable mention awardee, and after completing the report, a professor encouraged her to enter it into the competition

"Today, you cannot walk through a Fortune 500 company's building without seeing men in business suits," Allen said. "Though it seems like the suit has existed as a standard clothing piece since the dawn of time, it is actually a rather recent development."

The most important thing Allen said she learned about the research process during the completion of her report was how valuable resources and subject librarians can be when seeking information.

Matt Upson, director of library undergraduate services, launched the award at OSU.

"The award provides an incentive for students to consciously engage with Library resources and demonstrates the Library's commitment to supporting student research in a tangible way," Upson said.
