Science Cafe explores costs and benefits of gas and oil exploration

May 28, 2014

The Science Cafe OSU community series is offering the third of four programs on June 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the Stillwater Public Library Auditorium. The series "Potential Impacts of Oil and Gas Exploration" features OSU professors offering basic information about their research.

The potential costs and benefits associated with oil and gas exploration can be grouped into three main categories: environmental, financial, and community and landowner issues. Basic facts about state and federal environmental laws that have implications for industry, communities and consumers will be provided.

Program three features information from two OSU professors. Dr. Larry Sanders is professor and agricultural economist for the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service. He focuses primarily on policy issues, including the general economy, natural resource and environmental issues. Dr. Shannon Ferrell is an agricultural law specialist for the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service. Much of his programming focuses on energy and environmental issues.

Science Cafe OSU's "Potential Impacts of Oil and Gas Exploration" is a series of four programs. Program one explored drilling basics. Program two explored community and housing issues.

"We are an education program team attempting to provide science-based objective information," Sanders said of the series' speakers. "We are not an advocacy group nor are we promoting specific actions. We hope the attendees will acquire a science foundation to the information related to the issues, enabling them to recognize facts from myths. This will assist them in the actions they choose to take."

The series concludes June 19 with a forum of information about Oklahoma agencies and resources. Several representatives are expected to attend. Science Cafe OSU highlights interesting, relevant and current research and features brief presentations followed by discussion and questions. No science background is assumed or required.
