‘Tech Tuesday @2’ welcomes new series chair

Thornton names successor after three years of leadership

Tech Tuesday @2 is a monthly presentation and interactive showcase of emerging and innovative technologies. The goal of the series to help student develop both a proficiency and comfort with the technology they need to be success at OSU and beyond.

In 2015, Jackie German, Administrative Manager, launched Tech Tuesday @2. A steering committee was established and shortly after Nina Thornton, Multimedia Producer, was appointed the first chair of the series. During Thornton’s tenure, the Library hosted 28 hands-on demonstration that attracted close to 800 in-person attendees and more than 10,000 views on the live-stream and rebroadcasts.

“What I like most about the program is that it gives students, regardless of their major get their hands on tech that they might not otherwise be exposed to,” Thornton said. “It gives them an edge up.”

The success of the Tech Tuesday @2 series resulted in a handful of spinoff programs. Tech Tuesday to Go takes the hands-on demonstration of the original series on the road for monthly pop-up booth around campus. The annual Library Creativity Award allows students to enter their own work, often inspired by or using tools demonstrated in a Tech Tuesday, for a chance at monetary awards.

In spring 2018, Thornton concluded her term as Tech Tuesday chair. After three years of leadership, she is passing the role on to William Davis, Communication Specialist. Thornton remains on the committee in an advisory capacity.

“It’s been fun finding out about the different technology specialties there are on campus,” Thornton said. “I’ve been amazed at the diversity of expertise we have on our campus. It’s awesome.”

Davis and the committee are already in the planning stages for the 2018-19 series, and are eager to continue the program’s legacy of success.
