Traveling Exhibit Features State's Musical Legacy

STILLWATER -The OSU Library hosts "Oklahoma Rocks," a traveling exhibit, now until the middle of August. The exhibit is located in the south lobby and is open for viewing during the Library's normal hours of operation. The display is part of "One Book, One Community: Stillwater Reads Woody Guthrie," a series of programs, discussions and exhibits centered on Guthrie's autobiographical novel, "Bound for Glory." "Red Dirt musicians often credit Woody Guthrie for influencing their style of music, and I thought this exhibit would be a great tie-in," New Student and Community Outreach Librarian Karen Neurohr said. "Oklahoma Rocks" features content and images from the 2009 book, "Another HOT Oklahoma Night: A Rock & Roll Story" compiled by Larry O'Dell and Jeff Moore. The exhibit highlights Oklahoma musical artists such as Woody Guthrie, Leon Russell, All American Rejects, Bob Childers, Red Dirt Rangers, Other Lives, Colourmusic, Red Dirt Rock and Steve Ripley and the Tractors. "I am an Oklahoma music fan, and Stillwater is the home of Red Dirt Music," Neurohr said. "I was hoping to highlight this music connection for the 'One Book, One Community' project, as well as highlight that many of these musicians attended Oklahoma State University." "Oklahoma Rocks" exhibit was produced by the Oklahoma Historical Society, the Oklahoma Museum of History and the OKPOP Museum. It was created to kick start the OKPOP Museum, which will be in the Brady Arts district of Tulsa and dedicated to the creativity of Oklahomans and their influence on popular culture around the world. "One Book, One Community: Stillwater Reads Woody Guthrie" is a collaborative effort open to all ages designed to foster a sense of community through a shared reading experience and to broaden and deepen an appreciation of Woody Guthrie as an Oklahoma musician, writer and artist.
