The Dust Bowl Considered & Reconsidered
Exhibit opening lecture and reception held Oct. 28
October 23, 2014
When drought struck Oklahoma in the 1930s, Caroline Henderson and her husband stayed behind to protect their 28-year-old farm. Her letters to a friend paint a picture of dire poverty, desiccated soil, and long days with no sunshine.
Humanities scholar, Dr. Alvin Turner will discuss his research for and involvement with editing Caroline Henderson's "Letters from the Dust Bowl" at the opening reception for "Dust, Drought, and Dreams Gone Dry," a traveling exhibit on display at the Edmon Low Library Oct. 22 through Dec. 12.
"The Dust Bowl, Considered and Reconsidered" by Alvin Turner will be held in the Peggy V. Helmerich Browsing Room, Edmon Low Library at 4 p.m., Oct 28. The event is free and open to the public. Both "Letters from the Dust Bowl" and "Waiting on the Bounty" will be available for purchase.
"Dust, Drought and Dreams Gone Dry" was developed by the American Library Association Public Programs Office in collaboration with the libraries of Oklahoma State University and Mount Holyoke College. The exhibition and tour were made possible in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: Exploring the human endeavor. Local sponsors include the OSU Library, the Stillwater Public Library and the OSU Center for Oklahoma Studies.
