September 22, 2014

The OSU Library will host the first of a four-year series of lectures about the World War I era and its influence 100 years later. "The Great War and Its Legacy, 1914-1918" series begins Thursday, Oct. 2 at 3:30 p.m. in the Peggy V. Helmerich Browsing Room, Edmon Low Library.

The series commemorates WWI's centennial by highlighting the War's impact on life and culture worldwide. Specifically, the talks will focus on the Great War's impression on Oklahoma, Payne County and Oklahoma A&M College. Dr. Laura Belmonte, an expert on 20th century US diplomatic history, is the first speaker of the semester.

"World War I started the modern era and changed many of the institutions that we know of today," W.P. Wood Professor of Library Service and coordinator of the series, David Oberhelman, said. "It also has a lasting impact not just on the nation, but a local impact as well."

Belmonte will discuss the major events, conflicts and causes of the war. She will cover the global impact the war had on each country involved. As the series continues, the speakers will discuss the war's ramifications on topics ranging from literature and fashion to technology and medicine.

Oberhelman said the series "will be exploring the Great War--as it was called--and how it changed culture, the government, as well as life and society."

"The Great War and Its Legacy, 1914-1918" series is made possible through funding from the OSU Library and the Wood Professorship for Library Science. Related events are free and open to the public. For more information on the series visit http://info.library.okstate.edu/greatwar.
