John Hayes White Collection

About the Collection

The collection contains 78 photographs and 13 handwritten letters from White to his sister, Rena Spillman, and his mother, Sarah E. White. Also included is the Christmas dinner menu for Company "F," 2nd Battalion U.S. Engineers while they were stationed in the Vancouver Barracks, Washington. There is also a booklet, "The Second Division: Syllabi of the histories of regiments and separate organizations," which details the formation, mobilization, training, embarkation, service in France, and discharge of the Second Division during their service in World War I. Finally, the collection includes a leaf that gives the names of men of the Ninth Infantry who received mentions in dispatches and other honors during World War I.

Most of the photographs feature the 2nd Division Engineers, of which John Hayes White was a member, and were taken during WWI. The photograph subjects include WWI, the Philippines, Cuba, and portraits of White as a soldier and later, with his wife.

This collection was generously donated to OSU Libraries by White's great-great niece, Barbara Tessman, in December 2011.
