Instruction & Information Literacy

In an age of AI and information overload, students need to develop discernment: how to find and evaluate information, and when and how to use AI responsibly.

To enhance the teaching and research of our faculty, we partner with instructors across every discipline to help students become confident, critical, and ethical users of information. We collaborate with instructors to develop instruction sessions shaped by your goals and learning objectives, and grounded in the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy.

Request Instruction

Library instruction works best when it's scheduled after students receive their assignment and before they begin major work, and when you attend and help shape the session's goals. Please submit your request at least two weeks in advance, and a librarian will follow up within a few days to plan the details.

What we offer

• Course-integrated instruction: embedding information literacy into English Composition, First-Year Seminars, and both lower- and or upper-division courses 
• Online course content: providing asynchronous tutorials, guides, and modules that integrate into Canvas
• Information and digital literacy: developing search strategies, evaluating sources, fact-checking, and using information ethically 
• Reference management: getting started with Zotero, organizing and citing sources, and building shared libraries for research and collaboration
• Primary sources: discovering OSU Library's Special Collections, including medieval manuscripts, University Archives, and oral histories
• Oral history research design and collections support: integrating oral history into coursework, archiving faculty and student oral history projects, and general project planning 
• AI literacy: understanding, evaluating, and using AI tools in research and coursework 
• Literature review support: navigating the evidence synthesis process, choosing the right review methodology, designing research questions, and developing database search strategies
• Data literacy and management: finding, working with, and managing research data 
• Research impact, publishing, and copyright: measuring scholarly impact, navigating the publishing process, understanding author rights, and using and sharing work in compliance with copyright
• Maps and spatial data: offering consultations on mapping and visualization techniques, finding spatial data, workshops, and classroom visits to work with our collections
