Episode 42: Doel Reed and Southwest Art in Taos, New Mexico
Amplified Oklahoma Show Notes
October 25, 2019
Show Notes
Many OSU community members may be familiar with the Bartlett Center, which houses Oklahoma State University’s Art Department. Originally a women’s dorm, the building came to house our campus’ most creative students and faculty in 1984. But OSU hasn’t always had an art department. It was started in 1924 by a man by the name of Doel Reed. Doel and his daughter Martha would go on to become two of the most noteworthy creatives that OSU has ever produced. Today on Amplified Oklahoma, we’ll be talking about the legacies of Doel and Martha Reed on campus and in the worlds of Southwestern art and fashion. We’ll listen to excerpts from an interview with Martha Reed in 2007, and sit down with Dr. Carol Moder, director of OSU’s Doel Reed Center for the Arts in Taos, New Mexico. She’ll speak over Doel and Martha’s lives and careers and talk about the creation of the Doel Reed Center and the functions it now serves.
