Matthew Keith
Curriculum Developer of "Hazardous Materials For First Responders, 6th Edition"
February 7, 2023
Matthew Keith is a curriculum developer at Fire Protection Publications. As a native of Stillwater, Matthew attended Oklahoma State University and graduated in 2015 with a Bachelor’s in Rhetoric and Professional Writing. He recently completed his Master's degree in Educational Technology. Matthew enjoys working for a company that makes a difference in the lives of firefighters around the world. In his off time, Matthew enjoys reading, attending OSU sporting events, and spending time with his cat, Mario. He enjoys living in Stillwater because his all of his family, including his 3 year old niece, live close.
The purpose of "Hazardous Materials For First Responders, 6th Edition" is to provide emergency response personnel with the information they need to take appropriate initial actions at hazardous materials spills or releases and WMD incidents. This manual is limited to giving detailed information about initial and primarily defensive operations. More advanced procedures require assistance from hazardous materials technicians who have specialized training. The scope of this manual is to train emergency response personnel to meet the Awareness, Operations, and Operations Mission-Specific job performance requirements (JPRs) in chapters 5, 7, and 9 of NFPA 470, Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Standard for Responders, 2022 Edition. It addresses the emergency response personnel’s responsibility to recognize the presence of hazardous materials and WMDs, secure the area, don personnel protection, and request the assistance of trained technicians and law enforcement personnel, when necessary. Additionally, it addresses the control of hazardous materials releases and WMDs using operations for which the responders have been trained.
