Veronica Smith

Veronica Smith started working for the International Fire Service Training Association as a senior editor in April, 2012. Her first IFSTA manual was “Orientation and Terminology, Sixth Edition.” She completed “Vehicle Extrication, Fourth Edition” in 2017. Since being with IFSTA, she has completed the Fire Instructor 1 certification. She has a bachelor’s and a master’s from the University of Texas-Tyler in Journalism and Speech Communication. Before joining IFSTA, she was a staff photographer/graphics specialist and an adjunct instructor of Graphic Design and Communications at Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas. She has previous experience as a freelance photographer, graphics technician, and a display advertising photographer/editor. She is a certified scuba diver, served as a crew member on a hot air balloon team, loves tubing and kayaking, ghost hunting, and travel. She also loves animals and shares her space with Lilly, the pink-nosed Chihuahua, and two cats, Bailey and Boo.

 This edition of "Principles of Vehicle Extrication" is intended to help firefighters and first responders train to meet the job performance requirements of the National Fire Protection Association's standard 1006. The textbook provides the information and skills needed to become an Awareness, Operations, or Technician level rescue responder for vehicle incidents. The book includes knowledge and skills for stabilizing vehicles, cutting vehicles apart to access victims, and packaging victims for transport to medical facilities. The book addresses both passenger vehicles and heavy vehicles such as city buses and semis.
