February 16, 2018

Karen Neurohr is professor, research and outreach in the Oklahoma oral history research program for the OSU Library. Employed at the OSU Library for 12 years, her work has included oral history interviews, numerous collaborative community programs and formal and informal assessment activities. In 2012, she initiated Science Cafe OSU in partnership with the vice president for Research and Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society. Since then, she has coordinated 35 campus programs that have attracted close to 3,000 attendees, and 12 community programs at the Stillwater Public Library that have attracted more than 800 attendees. In 2015, for the collaborative series, "Potential Impacts of Oil and Gas Exploration," the OSU Library received the Excellence in Library Programming Award from the American Library Association.

Neurohr's book chapter, "First-generation Undergraduate Students and Library Spaces: A Case Study" was co-authored by Lucy Bailey, associate professor of Social Foundations and Qualitative Inquiry and director of Gender and Women's Studies at OSU. The chapter is based on Neurohr's dissertation, "First-generation Undergraduate Library Users: Experiences and perceptions of the library as place."

Increased electronic access to library resources has led to an ongoing discussion about the need for physical library buildings. On a college or university campus, the library is a destination for students, faculty and staff. Their usage makes the academic library a valuable learning space for campus. In “Assessing Library Space for Learning,” chapters discuss library usage at academic institutions and how that usage is an integral part of the student learning experience. This book is a combination of theory, practice and research-based chapters with an overall focus on the intersection of library space and learning.
