Fall 2016

This lecture will examine the impact of technology and advances in weaponry during the Great War, and how it contributed to the deadly nature of the conflict and gave rise to its most defining feature: trench warfare. The role of the United States in the conflict will be examined, and how its failure to prepare adequately for a modern, industrial war, hampered American forces severely during the majority of the conflict.

This five-hour workshop is appropriate for students, faculty, and staff who are interested in learning about Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the making of digital maps. Facilitated by Kevin Dyke, Spatial Data Librarian.

Science Café OSU highlights interesting, relevant and current science research. Monthly events offer lively and engaging conversations about science, and feature informal presentations, refreshments, door prizes and Q&A. No science background is assumed or required. Events are free and open to the public.

Matthew Schauer, assistant professor of the History of the British Empire, will give an overview of major events in Africa during World War I and examine the brutal nature of the African campaign. He will also explore the experience of war for the hundreds of thousands of African soldiers, known as Askaris, and porters who served in Africa and on the Western Front.

The Noon Concert Series features students from the OSU Music Department performing free concerts in an informal setting. The concerts are open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring lunch; drinks and dessert are provided. This popular series showcases students' talents and provides continued cultural programming in the Library. This series is sponsored by the Edmon Low Library Staff Association, the Friends of the OSU Library and the OSU Music Department.

At October's Tech Tuesday@2, Shannon Garde, library technology specialist, will cover Blender, its use as a 3D modeling platform and how users can utilize the software to bring their ideas into the third dimension. Blender is an open source software that supports 3D designs, animation, motion tracking and even video editing and game creation.

Constitution Day (or Citizenship Day) is an American federal observance that recognizes the ratification of the United States Constitution and those who have become U.S. citizens. It is observed on September 17, the day the U.S. Constitutional Convention signed the Constitution in 1787.

Peter Shull and Joseph Haley will discuss astronomy and physics in the first Science Café OSU of the fall semester. Science Café OSU will meet in the Peggy V. Helmerich Browsing Room on the second floor of the Edmon Low Library on September 30 at 6:30 p.m.

In September, Tech Tuesday @2: Two Turntables and a Microphone will be hosted by our very own Juliana Nykolaiszyn. The presentation will feature the digital music upgrade, provided by Jim and Liz Wise, in the Creative Studios. These monthly presentations are an interactive showcase of emerging and innovative technologies. Tech Tuesday @2 is held in the Edmon Low Creative Studios. Every event will feature tech-related door prizes.

The OSU Library is no stranger to bringing Oklahoma's stories to life through audio. Now, those storytelling efforts hit the internet with "Amplified Oklahoma," the first podcast produced by the Oklahoma Oral History Research Program at the OSU Library.

In response to student feedback, the Library is adding color printing to the suite of printing options in the Edmon Low Library.

Tech Tuesday at 2 makes a move to Friday night for this special Tech Tuesday at Twilight, highlighting the OSU Library's telescope check-out. OSU Astronomy Club president Daniel J. Oliver will host the program and give guests a hands-on experience with the three varieties of telescopes available at the Tech To Go desk in the Edmon Low Creative Studios.

The ACRL Instruction Section Teaching Methods Committee has recognized the research of our First Year Experience Librarian Holly Luetkenhaus as part of their Selected Resources for Assessment in Library Instruction list Holly was the lead author on the article First Year Course Programmatic Assessment: Final Essay Information Literacy Analysis, which appeared last fall in Reference & User Services Quarterly.
