2017: Sam Lebovic

Constitution Day at OSU with Dr. Sam Lebovic

This year, OSU will honor Constitution Day with Dr. Sam Lebovic, who will present his argument that the First Amendment right to free speech has been insufficient to guarantee a free press. This event will take place on Sept. 18 at 3:30 p.m. in the Peggy V. Helmerich Browsing Room, Edmon Low Library.

Constitution Day is dedicated to the men involved with the planning and signing of the Constitution. The OSU Library hosts an event each year to recognize the Constitution’s importance, as well as the lasting impact it has made on America.

David Oberhelman, W.P. Wood Professor of Library Services and coordinator of the Constitution Day event, said Lebovic was chosen to speak at this year’s event because he is an expert in Constitutional history. Lebovic has extensive knowledge of what legally establishes freedom of speech and press.

“The topics Lebovic will discuss are very relevant to many students,” Oberhelman said. “The Constitution Day event is a great opportunity to learn about our democracy at work.”

Lebovic will share his insight on the strengths and limits of the First Amendment with attendees. He will also discuss the effects these strengths and limits have on consumers of news and media in the United States.

Attendees can expect more than a lecture, the event will be conversational and feature a Q&A session at the end.

The Constitution Day event is free and open to the public. The event will also be broadcast live at www.ostate.tv. For more information visit library.okstate.edu/constitution or call 405-744-7331.
