About the Collection

The collection contains the research materials compiled by writer and activist Ruth Sigler Avery for her proposed book Fear, The Fifth Horseman: A Documentary-Anthology of the 1921 Tulsa Race Riot. It includes extensive research notes, photocopied documents, books, videos, audio recordings, and interview transcripts, as well as drafts of Avery’s writings. Also included are her poems, stories, essays, personal documents, correspondence, press clippings, and family materials such as genealogical records, narratives, and photographs. Together, these materials reflect Avery’s decades-long effort to document the Tulsa Race Massacre and preserve the voices and histories surrounding it.
