About the Collection

The Paul Miller Collection contains correspondence, speeches, newspaper columns, photographs, and memorabilia documenting the career of journalist and media executive Paul Miller, along with materials related to the Associated Press, the Gannett Corporation, and other news organizations with which he was involved.

Born in 1906 to the family of a Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) minister in Diamond, Missouri, Miller began his journalism career in Oklahoma, working for the Pawhuska Daily Journal while still in high school and later for the Daily Oklahoman and student newspapers at the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma A&M College (OAMC). After graduating from OAMC in 1931, following a year as publisher and reporter for the Okemah Daily Leader, he joined the Associated Press in 1932. Miller worked for AP bureaus across the country, eventually becoming chief of the Washington bureau in 1942, where he directed national political coverage and led AP reporting at the United Nations Conference on International Organization in San Francisco. In 1947, he joined the Gannett Corporation, becoming its president a decade later. From 1957 to 1978, he served as Gannett’s president and chief executive officer, and from 1963 to 1977, he was president and chairman of the Associated Press.

Miller traveled widely, meeting world leaders, reporting internationally, and acting as a prominent spokesman for journalism. He championed ethical reporting and urged the profession to evolve with technological and social change, famously stating, “Our actions must be determined not by mere compliance with state or federal law, not by public attitudes, but on the basis of doing the right thing.”
