About the Collection

The Oklahoma Today Collection provides access to digitized issues of Oklahoma’s official state magazine from its beginnings in 1950 to the present, with a one-year embargo on the most recent issues. Published bimonthly, Oklahoma Today showcases the state’s culture, history, landscapes, people, travel, and food.

The magazine began in 1950 as Resourceful Oklahoma, a publication of the Oklahoma Planning and Resources Board created to promote a positive image of the state after the Dust Bowl. Early issues highlighted industrial development and featured content from the board’s parks, recreation, forestry, and water resources divisions. In 1956, the Oklahoma Legislature designated Oklahoma Today as the state’s official magazine, a role it continues to fulfill by celebrating Oklahoma’s identity and achievements. Governor Raymond Gary’s message in the first issue encouraged readers to “first believe in Oklahoma – strongly,” a sentiment carried throughout the magazine’s history.

Over the decades, Oklahoma Today has earned numerous awards, including multiple Magazine of the Year honors from the International Regional Magazine Association and the Tulsa Press Club. Its pages feature contributions from notable writers, creatives, and public figures alongside long-standing staff and freelance contributors. The digitized collection preserves more than seventy years of storytelling that reflects Oklahoma’s evolving people, places, and culture.
