Undergraduate Library Research Award Presented

OSU students recognized for research efforts

July 6, 2017

The Undergraduate Library Research Award has been presented to the deserving OSU students who showcased and reflected on their research projects.

ULRA is designed to inspire students to share their research and use the library for future projects. Students submit a reflective essay detailing their research process, a final of near-final version of their research project and a bibliography. Submissions are designated into two categories: upperclassmen and underclassmen. A winner and honorable mention are offered for each category, earning $1,500 and $750, respectively.

Upperclassmen winner Anya Zornes submitted her project on the relationship between humanities and science and detailed her process of using librarians and the library search engine to find relevant materials. Zornes is a chemical engineering and math major.

"My biggest piece of advice would be to ask," Zornes said. "People can help if all you have is a topic, they can help you search for articles, and books, and even videos on that topic."

Underclassmen winner Taryn Blackstock is an applied exercise science major. Her project focused on reactive leg drops, a sensory motor assessment to predict falls in older individuals.

"The biggest resource for me was the databases" Blackstock said. "I was also about to use ILLiad to request articles online from other libraries."

Taylor Brooks, zoology major, received the upperclassmen honorable mention for her research on the consequences of stress for the diet regulation of crickets.

Through the award competition, ULRA connects students to the library by giving them the opportunity to be recognized and rewarded for their work. It also gives scholars an outlet to further their research and turn ideas into knowledge.
