Assistant Head of Archives, Assistant/Associate Professor

The Oklahoma State University Library seeks a highly motivated and innovative professional with a strong commitment to preservation and access to serve as Assistant Head of Archives. Among other duties, this position will be responsible for assisting the department head in carrying out the strategic goals of the department and managing the digital aspects of the Archives. This will include, among other tasks; supervision and administration; preservation and curation of born-digital files and analog materials converted to digital; development and implementation of electronic record workflows; coordination with metadata specialists for access, preservation, and discovery purposes; conversion of analog materials to appropriate digital formats; and the processing of digital materials in a wide variety of formats.

 

The Assistant Head is a member of the OSU Library faculty reporting to the Head of the Archives, but this position will also work closely with other departments in the Library, including with the Heads of Digital Resources and Discovery Services and the Oklahoma Oral History Research Program. Close cooperation and indirect reporting relationships with other library administrators are required of all library faculty. This is a tenure track position with anticipated initial appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.

Required Qualifications (Please address these qualifications in your application materials.)

  • Master’s degree (either MLIS or a relevant discipline)
  • Current Certified Archivist certification
  • At least four years of relevant professional experience in a large research or university library
  • Experience supervising full-time and part-time staff
  • Proven ability to provide digital preservation services for archival collections (with workflows that include regular refreshing, migration, and/or conversion along with verifying data authenticity)
  • Experience processing born-digital collections (including accession, ingest, assigning metadata, and filtering of personal, classified, or proprietary information)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of metadata standards (including technical and administrative) and acquaintance with a range of controlled vocabularies
  • Established aptitude for converting materials from analog to digital formats and knowledge of relevant archival standards
  • Experience providing access to collections through digital-asset management systems (e.g., Archives Space, CONTENTdm, and Dspace or through more exhibit-based formats)
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently or on a team, as necessary

  • DAS certification
  • A second advanced degree
  • Previous work with institutional repositories
  • Project management skills
  • A background in digital scholarship
  • Experience with emulation software for preserving software interfaces

Salary/BenefitsThis 12-month, tenure track position reports to the Head of Special Collections and University Archives.  $65,000 minimum for 12 months.  Oklahoma State University offers faculty a full health and retirement package, and support and opportunities for scholarly/professional development.
